Updated on December 7, 2010

Tips on how to download faster

Not many people know that there are actually many ways to make internet downloads faster. Maybe you are not able to maximize your use of bandwidth because of certain settings you never knew you could tweak. This is why I wrote this article to help those who want to have faster downloads.

Nowadays, it is important to have fast internet. Almost anything is already on the internet. If you do not know how to use torrent clients yet, I also made an article about how to download torrents. If you already know how to download files using torrents then you still shouldn't stop there. Just a few tweaks on your internet router and a bunch of other things will help speed up your internet performance, both uploads and downloads. So this isn't just for downloading torrent files or in peer-to-peer networks, some of the tips here may help your overall internet experience like even with surfing or chatting.

Learn about Port Forwarding

The most effective way, most especially with torrent downloads, would be to learn port forwarding. This isn't even just for downloading with torrents, you can even use this to make specific ports open for your online games or your other internet activities. I can't really have a specific tutorial on how to do this because the method is different for different kinds of internet routers. So what I suggest is that you checkout what your router's brand and model is and do a Google search on how you can port forward. Don't worry, you don't need so much technical knowledge to be able to do this. There are many step-by-step tutorials online that will help you.

After learning how to do port-forwarding, you will notice significant speed increase in your torrent downloads.

Here's one video tutorial that I found. There are many others for specific torrent clients (BitTorrent, BitComet, uTorrent) and specific internet router brands and models:

Keep your antivirus software up to date

Having viruses, spyware, malware, adware, trojans, or other names of harmful files on your computer can definitely slow down your download speed and even your overall computer speed. Having the right anti-virus software that is updated can help make sure that you do not have these kinds of files and that future attacks can be prevented. Remember that it is not all about having an anti-virus, having one that is updated is what's important because new viruses are created everyday that can bypass your anti-virus software and this is why one that is updated can really protect your system and optimize your internet download speed.

Contact your ISP

Check out speedtest.net and see if your results comply with what your ISP said you are paying for. If it is slower then you can call them. It is your right to know why you are getting lower quality than what you are promised and what you are paying for. There are alternative ISPs that are competing against the one you have and if you are not satisfied with the one you already have then you can always transfer. This is the beauty of a competitive market. Quality of service will always increase and the prices will be competing against each other.

Another thing, if the customer service is bad then consider transferring because customer service is one of the most important things to consider when looking for an internet service provider.

Also, why not consider getting a higher plan for faster internet? If download speed is really that important to you then it would really be a wise investment to get a higher plan and have above-average download speed.

I hope you learned a thing or two with my tips on how to make internet download speed faster.
